Every year, Glenny opens its doors in Stratford, Essex, Kent and North London to a number of graduates looking to pursue a career in property. Today, we’re speaking to one of our graduates, Sam Coker, about his role at Glenny.

Sam, you joined Glenny’s Business Space Lease Advisory team as an Assistant Surveyor in August 2019. Can you talk us through the joining process?

Like many graduates, I went through a few interviews and assessments to weigh up my options and get a feel for what’s out there. What I noticed first about Glenny was the culture. I instantly felt welcomed and even throughout the interview stages, the team felt like the right fit and that I’d have the opportunity to build meaningful relationships while learning on the job. Having been with the firm for over six months now, it’s clear that this perception was accurate.

What does your average day look like?

Life at Glenny is very rewarding. From the outset you are encouraged to take responsibility with the support of the firms’ experienced surveyors. Everyone is happy to walk you through your daily tasks while supporting you to meet your APC requirements, but you are also given the opportunity to work with other departments and gain knowledge from the those outside of your immediate team, which is particularly helpful for getting your chartership.

What’s your favourite thing about your role?

There’s a lot of in-depth paperwork you must complete as a surveyor, and I’ve already had so many opportunities to get that ‘hands-on experience’ by completing onsite valuations, meeting with clients, tenants and other stakeholders on a regular basis so I’m constantly building on my technical and interpersonal skills.

Overall, it’s just a very good place to work. It can be quite overwhelming deciding on where you fit in the industry, particularly at a larger firm, but Glenny offers support at all levels to help you find your way. I would say that if you are interested in joining as a graduate, you should go for it!

Thanks, Sam!
